Shape Shift considers what it means to move through the world when your existence is constantly read by others. The octopus, fluid, intelligent, and endlessly adaptive, serves as a stand-in for the trans and nonbinary experience of changing to survive while searching for spaces where no transformation is required. The accompanying poem reflects the quiet exhaustion of blending in, softening oneself to match an atmosphere, and questioning where adaptation ends and authenticity begins. Through layered textures and fractured imagery, the work embraces gender not as something fixed, but as something living, expansive, responsive, and continually becoming.
